The beauty of now

by Daria Halprin

1

It begins here,

When I look in this mirror
I see such a bitterness
In the lines that have etched
Deep furrows in the field of my face.

Eyes that look back
Emptied of love
Swollen with the pollen
Of forget-me-nots.

Perhaps I have not kept this face
As well disguised as I imagined
Or would have wished.
Perhaps I didn’t take care as I should have.

What a shame.

Is there something here
Called the depth of brilliant red
In the bushes of poison ivy
Laying quietly under the majestic oaks
As if they are the purest blood
Of late summer’s heart pounding with Love.

Is there something here
Called the azure sky
Breaking through the
Moist and salty fog bank
To reveal the mightiest
Warmest sun sparkling on
Ocean in late summer
Beating with Love.

Is there something here
Called the footsteps of a sisterhood
Walking the narrow cobblestoned lanes
With views that take the breath away
Stretching for miles beyond the chatter, gossip and complaints
Of late summer
Beating with Love.

Is there something here
Called the beauty of now,
Beyond the disappointments and regrets
Of late summer
Beating with Love.

I look to the moss
Hanging delicately from
The massive tree branches

My heart skips a beat,
With such tenderness
For both the mighty and the meek
In this strong embrace
Each with and for the other.

4

Away from all the daily ruckus
I wonder,
What was all that fighting about?

5

The beauty of now is this!
All of it!
Each breath,
Each forgiveness
